Seeds are one of the most valuable things we can preserve — not just for our own gardens, but for future generations.
Nine community members gathered at Bainham Hall on 21 April for our third Practical Living Series session — and what a day it was. We built the foundations of our community garden and deepened our seed saving knowledge, all before mid-afternoon.
11:00–12:00: Community Garden Build
The morning started outside behind Bainham Hall, where the community garden began to take shape. Armed with corrugated iron, waratah posts, drill, sledge hammer, spade, grubber and post rammer, the group worked together to construct the first raised garden bed.
One of the participants documented the build on video, complete with music and creative playback speeds. Amazing effort! Thank you.

The raised bed was built using donated materials generously contributed by community members and local businesses:
- Corrugated iron: donated by community members

- Pallets: donated by community members

- Composting materials: donated by community members to fill the bed

12:00–14:30: Seed Saving with Sol Morgan
After lunch, Sol Morgan from the Sustainable Living Centre in Takaka led an engaging and practical workshop on seed saving for food resilience.
Sol covered the full journey of saving seeds, from knowing which varieties are worth saving, to harvesting at the right time, cleaning, drying, and storing properly. He shared not just knowedge on the importance and practices of seed saving, but also various seeds. Seed saving really matters, not just for individual gardeners but for long-term community food security and biodiversity. Join the Golden Bay Seed Saving group.
